Return to Mischief by Migs Villanueva

Galerie Francesca is pleased to present Return to Mischief, Migs Villanueva’s eighth solo exhibition. Villanueva is a multi-awarded writer, a very much sought after painter and a former president of the prestigious Saturday Group. She is known for her refreshingly simplified depiction of children, employing a wabi-sabi style which pares down the elements of form to their most basic, in order to highlight essence instead. Using the simplest lines and often, only hints of harmonious color, she is able to convey simplicity and innocence – precious attributes in children, which, we as adults tend to lose. In Return to Mischief, the artist returns to ManilArt, the platform which thrust her to the public’s unwavering attention, with an interactive installation. Creating a simulation of a small neighborhood park, which to the child’s imagination becomes a makeshift playground, Villanueva contextualizes her works in a space conducive to reminiscing, and entices the viewers to return to their carefree childhoods, and remember their dreams, aspirations, naughtiness and innocence. She also provides a set of questions to prompt her viewers to interact with her freedom wall, and create the installation with her as the art fair progresses.

Villanueva, who is now a grandmother, insists in giving her grandchildren the right to do as they please, to prolong their childhood as much as possible. Delighting in their playfulness and carefree innocence, she paints them in various activities suggesting situations of joyful discovery and make-believe wonder. By sharing her own experiences through her work, she invites viewers to make their own connection with their own childhood, and remember their own joys, when they were themselves children. She firmly believes that the world will be a better place if we think of children, and be as they are.

In Return to Mischief, Villanueva teams up with museum curator Ricky Francisco. It is presented by Galerie Francesca a Philippine art gallery founded in 2005 by its Managing Director, Ms. Susanne DS Tiausas. Within its 13 years of operation, it has successfully launched the career of Migs Villanueva, among other recognized Filipino artists.
