Feb 2 to 16: “Premeditated.”
“I do not close my eyes and hope for the best.” Such was the direct response of American abstractionist Joan Mitchell to accusations that abstract painting can be done by a child of five since it is nothing else but a lot of paint-flinging and just a waste of expensive material. More than a century since the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky pioneered the concept of abstraction as a valid expression of emotional reality, prejudice and misconception still hound this non-representational idiom.
In continuing to propel the appreciation of abstraction among Filipino collectors, Art Anton presents “Premeditated.” While the title may instantly allude to a crime or unpleasant incident, it counters precisely the prevailing negative notion and posits that abstraction is a form of art making that is preconceived and done on purpose, necessitating careful planning and a measure of forethought. The artist is fully conscious of every gestural move and aesthetic decision, affecting line, color, form, shape, space, light, and texture.
Participating artists are: Harold Gomez, Fitz Herrera, Binong Alvin Javier, Marlon Magbanua, Dennis ”Sio” Montera, Jayson Muring, Michael Pastorizo, Jay Ragma, Alfonso Recto, and Valen Valero.
