“Petal Attraction” is visual artist Jemina Reyes’ way of asserting that the idea of beauty cannot be negated in the arts — even though attempts have been made of redefining, rejecting or degrading it. It is by design that artists are endowed with aesthetic expressions. A single petal from a flower does not lose the essence of beauty no matter how the blossom is taken apart; so too an artist evokes beauty with a stroke or a mark; for it is innate within an artist’s soul to materialize it.

In most of Jemina`s paintings, the abstracted petals are set against a dark background in order to highlight the figure in itself. This allows the painting to be analyzed by both the artist and the viewer. It also presents them as the icons of beauty that they are. Jemina showcases her flowers through her expression of color, composition, and spontaneous brushstrokes. The artist depicts her fascination of petals and their unexpected changes while never really losing their outward allure.

Jemina Reyes formulated her own theoretical concept called “Inflexive Aesthetics”. The term states that aesthetic style conforms to three important factors: Intention, Influence, and Intuition. They operate in varying degrees but when synergized together, marks a change or a spark in the creative production that leads to an aesthetic outcome — and when achieved, beauty transpires.

Jemina Reyes studied at the Santa Barbara City College in the U.S. where she obtained her Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Studies. After that, she went to finish her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Studio at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Jemina recently obtained her Master of Arts Major in Fine Arts and Design at the Philippine Women’s University. She continuously showcases her works through solo exhibitions since 1996 and has participated in various group shows both locally and internationally. She became a member of the Art Association of the Philippines and is currently an Agos Kulay Maynila member.

Jemina Reyes’ works have been commissioned by Solaire Resort and Casino, 3M Philippines, and Asya Resort, among others. She has extensively exhibited her works in the Philippines, including at the Philippine International Convention Center, U.P. Vargas Museum, RCBC Plaza, PhilAm Life Theatre, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
