Mixed-Up @Pinto Art Museum

Mixed-Up A willingness to confront the numerous articulations of today’s art while remaining faithful to his own artistic identity,Daniel “Dansoy” Coquilla engages in mixed-media forms that portray the distinct faces gazing upwards in his 29th solo exhibition.

Playfully titled Mixed-Up, the exhibition teases and welcomes the viewers in this artistic exploration which opens on February 2,2020 at the Pinto Art Museum. Beyond its jocular connotation,Mixed-Up extends itself further as it begins to embody the different aspects of the artist’s practice and process. The seemingly hodgepodge of narratives occupying the canvases are tethered by the everyday as experience by the artist and expressed through the sea of faces harmoniously staring skyward into the unknown. The daily life of the common folk transforms as the artist combines references from popular culture that heighten the visual character of each painting rendered in an expressionistic manner.

The artistic process reveals the intimate bond between father and daughter as Dansoy is assisted by his daughter in the progression of his works.Such linkages between the artist, his world, and his art mix together as he shifts his gaze upwards to new possibilities. Setting out as a comics illustrator, the artist later on formally trained as a painting major in the University of the Philippines Fine Art program. Now working as film projectionist in the UP Film Institute, the artist finds time to work on his paintings after his full-time job and during the weekends.Daniel Coquilla is a CCP Thirteen Artists awardee and has exhibited in various local and international galleries and museums. Mixed-Up runs until February 16,2020
