March 1-20: “Reflections”
VENUE: Galerie Roberto, Unit 4, Molito Lifestyle Extension Bldg., Madrigal Ave. cor. Commerce Ave., Alabang, Muntinlupa City
A sleek cascade of ascending and descending lines, firm and rigid, severe and taut with tension like exposed livewires, deployed in choreographic repetition, is the structuring principle behind the reductive aesthetics of award-winning artist Jay Ragma.
In a mostly black and white field, resisting a lyric impulse, the artist arrays an interdependent relationship of horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines that court resemblances of architectural edifices or skylines, executed with a technique evocative of mechanical precision, while encouraging a complex human reaction and experience.
Thus, the title “Reflections,” which mirrors and alludes to the human condition, felt in a range of emotions, from bliss and ecstasy to doubt and anxiety, and all this viewed from a calculatedly formal perception.
